How much sand do you collect in your shoes while hiking through these dunes? Jen dumped sand out of her shoes a few times during the hike, but Paul waited until the end:

Our breakfast spot for Saturday was the Tecolote Cafe, relatively near our hotel on Cerrillos Road. Jen’s atole piñon (blue cornmeal and pine nuts) pancakes were very good – the food in Santa Fe quickly made up for the more expensive but less enjoyable meals in Las Vegas. Shortly thereafter, Paul began the 3.5-hour drive [...]
Virgin River, Zion National Park, UT

This isn’t the Narrows specifically, but it’s a shaky panoramic of the Virgin River along the Riverside Walk. We stopped to sit on a rock outcrop for awhile and have a snack. The squirrels were delighted to see us.
The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah

We keep coming back to Zion National Park in Utah, which is easily our favorite park in the United States. The last time we visited, back in 2008, we took the mile-long Riverside Trail to the gateway to the Narrows, hoping to venture into the water a little and capture a few photographs of the [...]
Mount Gorham, Acadia National Park, ME

We set off on a brief hike up Mount Gorham, which involved a short walk up a rocky trail to the top of a small mountain where we could look down all along the coastline. It was one of our favorite hikes ever. We didn’t spend much time at the top, since we noticed that [...]
Thunder Hole, Acadia National Park, ME

Thunder Hole gets its name from a recessed area in the rocky shore of the coast where, when the seawater rushes in with enough force, it makes a clapping sound like thunder. During high tide, the spray from the water can also drench tourists standing nearby. There was no danger of being drenched while we [...]
Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park, ME

On our third day in Maine, we had a quick breakfast at the hotel restaurant and drove (Paul drove) 3.5 hours to Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. The weather was beautiful, so we drove up to Cadillac Mountain for a panoramic view from the top. Sadly, the cloud cover was low that day, [...]

On our final day in Seattle, we woke up early and started driving back to Mount Rainier – hoping for better weather this time. We grabbed a quick breakfast at Starbuck’s and drove straight up to Paradise, where (no surprise) we found the mountain completely socked in again. As a last-ditch effort, we drove east [...]
Reflection Lakes and Narada Falls, Mount Rainier National Park, WA

We stopped at Reflection Lakes because it was on the list of sites Jen had picked, but with low expectations – the whole point of the lakes is that you can see the mountain reflected in them. Obviously, that was not the case on this day. One thing was clear at the park – Narada [...]
Paradise trails, Mount Rainier National Park, WA

Jen spent a lot of time researching Mount Rainier National Park and knew exactly what to expect at Paradise this time of year – beautiful fields of wildflowers and tall trees in front of a backdrop of the huge mountain. We got two out of three – beautiful flowers and tall trees. Unfortunately, a weather [...]
